I started the site because i searched Alta and low for a really cool pxl-2000 page. As you know if you're a fan, my keys opened no doors. How could a camera this cool be pageless? Wonder no longer. It's here.

  • Hold on there, Mom! Before you send me a question about the pxl, i made a Frequently Asked Questions list and put all my old answers to people's questions into html format. The PXL-2000 is a camera which was manufactured by Fisher Price in the eighties. It was marketed as a toy for kids, so they could play at making their own home movies. Unfortunately, the relatively high price ( ~US$100; high compared to a Go-Bot! ) didn't keep it on the shelf, coupled with a somewhat flaccid demand. The PXL-2000 is a completely self-contained camcorder. It records both audio and black and white video on standard chromium-oxide audio tapes. The picture is four-way letterboxed, or "gutterboxed," as you'll hear me say. The name of the camera/technology ( they're almost interchangeable ) comes from the highly pixelated picture; that is, it's very blocky looking. Imagine the old Atari video games on your grandma's tv. The perfect medium for low-budget movie-makers and experimenters... people like me.

I have two pxl's, both of which i obtained free. (yes!) One is rigged to accept ac/dc via a curly 1/4" audio cord; the skinny adaptor cable that came with it was garbage. I stripped the tape roller and spindles, etc. to lighten it. I bypass the CrO2 audio format in favor of conventional videotape. I send the signal to an outboard source (currently my roommate glorybox's). If you look at my camera you can see the jack i installed at the bottom of the handle. The setup works really well, because i love the thick quarter inch jack that snaps in with a resounding CLICK. It wasn't designed to carry dc power, but i haven't had a problem. If you have a pxl you want to modify, send mail to the list.
I'm also looking in to an infra-red modification. stay tuned...

Pixelvision is intoxicating. The way a hand blurs across the screen. A face exploding in a blossom of light and then sinking back into a puddle of shadow. The bizarre motion that is unique to the pxl brings me back again and again. The picture is dreamy, ethereal...ghostly. I love it. I hope you do too. For an example of a great movie that uses the pxl, visit october films' nadja pages , which showcase michael almereyda's great 1995 movie. also check out my promo-pak CD, with my short films rituals and monkeyboy, or my pxl gallery.
